Computer Labs

Computer purchase or upgrade
To help you purchase or upgrade a computer that will be suitable for design work in the studio, please view these specifications.

NetID
To obtain your Dalhousie NetID, have your student number ready and follow the online instructions. You can then activate your Dalhousie e-mail address and can use any lab computer in the university.

Lab locations
There are five computer labs in the Faculty of Architecture and Planning: the space next to Room HA18, Room HB1, East studio, West studio, and Furry Room. The East studio and Room HB1 have a laser printer.

Support
Questions about computer operation should be directed to Patrick Kelly in Room HA32 (weekdays 9:30 to 5:00) or Doug Pitcairn in Room HA31 (weekdays 8:00 to 12:00).

Security
All of the computer equipment in the labs is connected to an alarm system that is monitored by Dalhousie Security. Removing equipment will trigger the alarm.

Backup and file storage
To avoid losing your computer files due to hardware failure, accident, or theft, Dalhousie offers a free Home Directory Service with 250 MB of secure storage space on a university network server that is backed up each night. For access, go to My.Dal, log in, and open NetStorage.

Dalhousie File Exchange
If you need to send or receive a large file (up to 2 GB) that would overload your Dalhousie e-mail account, you can use Dalhousie File Exchange. Access the site with your NetID and password. Others who send you files don't need to log in.

Reporting problems
If you notice a hardware or software problem with a Windows computer, go to the computer's Troubleshooting window and send an e-mail message to University Computing and Information Services. To report a problem with a Macintosh computer, contact Patrick Kelly. Include your name, the date, the computer number, and the problem. If necessary, the problem will be reported to UCIS.

Borrowing policy
To be eligible to borrow equipment, you must sign the Faculty's borrowing agreement and submit it to the Faculty office. Items such as software manuals may be borrowed for up to seven days. To borrow an item, see Patrick Kelly or Doug Pitcairn.
