Computer Printing and Scanning

Laserprinting (up to 11" x 17")

Printing
The student laserprinters are located in the East Studio and Room HB1. The East Studio has three printers: letter-size black-and-white, tabloid-size black-and-white, and tabloid-size colour. To send a file to a particular printer, select the appropriate queue: Arch Letter, Arch Tabloid, or Arch Colour Tabloid. In Room HB1 there is one queue (Planning Letter) for the printer. The letter-size printers default to double-sided printing unless overridden manually. For detailed instructions on sending a file to the printer, check the notice in the computer labs.

Cost
Black-and-white letter-size prints are five cents per page. Black-and-white tabloid-size prints are 10 cents per page. Colour tabloid-size prints are $1.00 per page. Access to the print queue is via the Dalhousie network. Printing costs in most computer labs across the university are debited from your DalCard.

Support
If you have a question about laserprinting, see Patrick Kelly (Room HA32).

Tracks

Colour printing and large-format printing

Print sizes
The Epson 7600 printer can produce black-and-white and colour prints up to 2880 dpi and up to 24" x 96". The HP LaserJet 5550dn laserprinter can print in full colour up to 12" x 18". The HP1055CM printer and Canon iPF8100 can produce black-and-white and colour prints up to 600 dpi and up to 44" wide; the maximum length depends on the software (AutoCAD, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.). You cannot print directly from your own computer or a lab computer to the colour printers.

Taking a colour file to the printer
Before proceeding, check with Ken on the proper file format to use: e.g., JPEG vs. PDF, Illustrator vs. Photoshop. Copy the file onto a USB flash drive or a CD, then take it to the Print Room (Room HA15). You are expected to print your own files. For major deadlines, when an entire class wants prints, extended hours will be posted on the bulletin board several days in advance.

Cost
The cost of a print depends on the ink coverage. If you need to know how much a print will cost, see Ken before asking him to print it. Bring money when you pick up your prints.

Support
See Ken in the Print Room weekdays between 8:00 and 4:00. An assistant may be available in the evening and during peak times in the term.

Large-format scanning

Scan size
The scanner can handle drawings up to 40" wide.

Submitting a drawing for scanning
To request a scan, see Ken before dropping off originals, as not all drawings can go into the scanner. The turnaround time is typically 24 hours but will depend on the current volume of work. You can pick up the digital file by bringing a USB flash drive or a blank CD to the Print Room.

Cost
Each scan is $2.00. Bring money when you pick up your scans.

Support
See Ken in the Print Room weekdays between 8:00 and 4:00.
