Recent research has focused on architectural design in the context of marginalized communities or cultures under threat. Issues of cultural and environmental sustainability are fundamental to the work. In many cases this involves a study of local material cultures, contemporary and historic, as the background to invention and adaptation which has cultural continuity. Another area of research is the development of energy modeling and testing methods that can be used in the early stages of design development, allowing for optimization of building systems and materials.
