The School of Planning draws its collective teaching strength from a combination of full time faculty, adjunct professors who take time from their professional work to teach or participate in courses, and faculty members from other departments or schools who generously devote time to student supervision. Together, they bring a diverse range of experiences and expertise to planning education.

Studied at Western Ontario (BA Anthropology), McMaster (MA Anthropology), Waterloo (MA and PhD regional planning).

Fellow, Canadian Institute of Planners (FCIP);
Nova Scotia Licensed Professional Planner (LPP).

Specializes in community analysis and planning. Taught environmental planning at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Japan Foundation Research Fellow 1999. Visiting researcher Chukyo University, Toyota, Japan. Chair of the Editorial Board of Plan Canada (2001 - 2004).

Teaching areas include planning history, planning theory, community analysis, research methods, social planning, and community design.

Research interests: planning practice, sustainability in residential land use planning, Third World planning, human ecology, cultural context of planning, neighbourhood planning, industrial park planning. Current projects include the influence of new urbanism urbanism and smart growth, the planning response to gated communities, the suburbs in theory and practice, creative city regions, and health and the built environment.

 
Muhammad (Ahsan) Habib, PhD

Studied at the University of Toronto (PhD, Civil Engineering, 2009), BUET (MURP and BURP)

Dr. Habib specializes in transportation-land use interactions, travel demand forecasting, and microsimulation of urban systems; taught at the University of Toronto and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET); held professional position at the Ministry of Transportation, Ontario (MTO).

Teaching interests include transportation planning, research design, planning methods, GIS and spatial analysis, and sustainability.

Research interests include transportation planning and policy analysis, multi-modal systems, transportation-land use-emission-energy linkages, travel behaviour and demand, travel surveys, GIS applications, and econometric modeling.

 
Patricia Manuel, PhD

Studied at Carleton (BA Hon. Geography), McGill (MSc Geography), and Dalhousie(PhD Interdisciplinary).

Member, Canadian Institute of Planners (MCIP);
Nova Scotia Licensed Professional Planner (LPP).

Dr. Manuel specializes in environmental planning and management. Taught at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Environmental consultant, formerly with Aerde Environmental. Also appointed to School of Occupational Therapy.

Teaching areas: landscape analysis, landscape ecology, environmental planning, research design, environment and health.

Research interests include: landscape ecology, wetlands evaluation and management, watershed planning, environmental management, and community health.

Private practice as planner and architect in Toronto. Served as Director of Downtown Planning for the City of Calgary. Former chairman of the Planning Advisory Committee for the City of Halifax. Served on National Capital Commission Advisory Committee. Director of Cities and Environment Unit and Director of the Brazil Project.

Teaching areas: planning history, urban design, community design, rural planning.

Eric Rapaport, PhD

Studied landscape architecture, natural resource management, environmental engineering and sustainable infrastructure, and regional planning at University of Wisconsin (BSc) and the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm (MSc, PhD).

Nova Scotia Licensed Professional Planner (LPP).

Taught planning at Gavle University, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, and University of Northern British Columbia.

Teaching areas: landscape analysis, environmental planning, geographic information systems, 3-D computer graphics, environmental impact assessment, and infrastructure planning.

Research interests include: vehicle/wildlife interactions on highways, multiple criteria evaluation in environmental planning, managing air pollution from traffic, and environmental policy.

Specializes in environmental planning and landscape architecture.
Environmental consultant to HRM and other clients. Taught environmental planning at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.

Teaching areas: environmental planning, site planning, landscape design, design methods and theory, and site infrastructure.

Research and professional interests include: environmental analysis, site planning, visual assessment, landscape management, open space planning, and heritage landscape conservation.
