Introduction
Student Life in the School of Planning
One of the major assets of our planning programs is the rich, collegial student life. Another is our location in a vibrant regional centre.
Student organizations are active, having a role in governing their own academic, social, and recreational activities, but also participating in the governance of the School of Planning, the Faculty of Architecture and Planning, and the Dalhousie Senate.
We try to help our students understand their future roles as planners. We encourage students to become involved in the local community and in the professional community through an internship program for BCD Honours students, and a Co-op work term for Master of Planning students. The Master of Planning students have also also initiated a mentorship program in co-operation with local professional planners.
Dalhousie planning students are also active in the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP); its regional affiliate, the Atlantic Planners Institute (API); and the Licensed Professional Planners of Nova Scotia. Our students have a seat on the API Council, and are eligible to run for election to the CIP Council.
Our students have been very active in the Canadian Association of Planning Students, which holds annual conferences that engage students and professionals in presentation of research and project work.
